Fort Bend County Libraries is kicking off the summer months with programs specifically designed for high school-aged teens in grades 9 through 12. The programs will provide fun and challenging opportunities for these young adults, who are also encouraged to become active participants in designing and orchestrating new activities for teens in the library system.

In July, the First Colony Branch Library will present four exciting programs for the Young Adult community.

•Java for Beginners – Wednesdays and Thursdays, July 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, and 26; 10:00 am to 12:00 noon; Conference Room. Teens in grades 9 through 12 will learn the basics of computer programming, control structures, and graphics. Each class builds upon skills learned in the previous one. By the end of the 6-part series, participants will have created a simple, playable, user-controlled game or animation.

•FC Computer Camp: Google Tools for Students – Wednesday, July 11, 2:00 pm, Conference Room. Teens entering grades 9 through 12 will learn how to use Google’s free online tools -- including Google Drive, Google Docs, and Google Sheets -- to create, access, and share files from any computer with the Internet.

•Snapology Rescue Mission – Saturday, July 21,1:00 pm, Meeting Room. In this program, presented by Snapology of Sugar Land and Missouri City, students entering grades 9 through 12 will learn how to build and program an autonomous robot using LEGO® bricks. Their new skills will be used to build a robot to complete challenges to help a fictional town solve real-world problems after a natural disaster.

•YA Program: Harry Potter Birthday Bash – Friday, July 27, 2:00 pm, Meeting Room. Teens entering grades 9 through 12 are invited to attend a magical celebration of the world’s most famous wizard. Enjoy enchanting refreshments, trivia, and a cosplay contest! (Reservations not required).

These programs are free and open to the public. To register online at the library’s website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us), click on “Events,” select “First Colony Branch,” and find the program. Participants may also register by calling the library at 281-238-2800, or by visiting the library.

The First Colony Branch Library is located at 2121 Austin Parkway in Sugar Land.
