Fort Bend County Libraries is launching new programs specifically designed for high school-aged teens in grades 9 through 12. The programs provide fun and challenging opportunities for these young adults, who are also encouraged to become active participants in designing and orchestrating new activities for teens in the library system.

In July, the Cinco Ranch Branch Library will present the following programs for the Young Adult community.

•Zine Express – Tuesday, July 10, 1:00-2:00 pm, Conference Classroom. Teens in grades 9-12 will learn how to create a zine of their own. Short for “fanzine,” zines are self-published magazines in which one can express opinions on important issues, interests, and ideas to be shared with friends and community. Materials will be provided.

•Young Adult Book Club – Wednesday, July 11, 4:00-5:00 pm, Conference Classroom. Teen readers in grades 9-12 will have the opportunity to meet with others who share the same love for great books, and have a lively discussion on the reasons a book or its characters were liked or disliked. Those attending the book-club meeting in July are invited to talk about The Kiss of Deception, the first book in the “Remnant Chronicles” series written by Mary E. Pearson.

•Upcycled T-Shirts – Wednesday, July 18, 2:00-4:00 pm, Conference Classroom. Do you have old t-shirts that you’ve outgrown or that have seen better days? Teens in grades 9 through 12 can bring an old t-shirt and learn how to transform it into something new with a few simple no-sew techniques! Participants should bring at least one old t-shirt that they are willing to cut, twist, and transform. All other supplies will be provided. Registration required.

•Canvas Art for Teens – Saturday, July 28, 2:00-4:00 pm, Conference Classroom. Teens in grades 9 through 12 will learn how to paint an abstract acrylic tree with impressionistic techniques and coloring. Get tips on how/why to incorporate certain colors as opposed to others. Everyone will create their own painting to take home. Materials for this program are provided courtesy of the Friends of the Cinco Ranch Branch Library. Registration required.

The programs are free and open to the public. For more information, or to register for classes, call the Cinco Ranch Branch Library at 281-395-1311, or sign up on the library’s website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us), by clicking on “Events,” selecting “Cinco Ranch Branch Library,” and finding the program.
