Fort Bend County Libraries is launching new programs specifically designed for high school-aged teens in grades 9 through 12. The programs provide fun and challenging opportunities for these young adults, who are also encouraged to become active participants in designing and orchestrating new activities for teens in the library system.

In June, the Missouri City Branch Library will have the following programs for the Young Adult (YA) community.

•High School Chess Club – Mondays, June 5-July 31; 2:00-4:00 pm, Conference Room. Teen chess players of all skill levels – from beginners to advanced – are invited to challenge their mental and strategic skills and practice their strategies with others. Teens can learn new chess moves, openings and techniques, and earn their way up the leaderboard!

•YA Art Class – Monday, June 5, 3:00-5:00 pm, Meeting Room. Teens can unleash their creative side while learning new artistic techniques with canvas, sculpture, illustration, and more.

•Teen Driving Program – Monday, June 12, 3:00-5:00 pm, Meeting Room. A representative from the Texas Driving Academy will provide step-by-step instructions for teens who are interested in getting their driver’s license. Hear about driving lessons, whether or not to sign up with a driving school, where to practice driving and with whom, what forms or tests may be needed at the driving school or Department of Public Safety, and more.

•YA Game Day – Monday, June 19, 3:00-5:00 pm, Meeting Room. Teens who enjoy the challenge, excitement and competition of playing table-top games or card games are invited to test their skills against one another at this special event for young adults in high school. Classic and new board games will be on hand, but those attending the event are welcome to bring their own favorite games as well.

•Paranormal Program – Monday, June 26, 3:00-5:00 pm, Meeting Room. Meli Trejo, director of the Houston Paranormal Research Team, will share experiences her group has had while investigating supernatural occurrences and urban legends. Hear about creepypastas -- horror-related tales or images that have been shared around the Internet – and learn how the stories began and grew.

These programs are free and open to the public. For more information, call the Missouri City Branch Library at 281-238-2100 or the library system’s Public Information Office at 281-633-4734. The Missouri City Branch Library is located at 1530 Texas Parkway.
